Brown Belt Kata
Bassia Dai. This kata displays attacking techniques so powerful that it reminded the ancients of the strength required of both mind and body, to overcome the position of an entrenched enemy and break into his fortress against all odds. Bassia Dia, ' To Storm A Castle ' should display when performed correctly, enough mental and physical power to break the will of a potential enemy to fight. An exhibition of powerful blocking techniques enabling the defendant to launch devastating counter attacks on the opponent. Although the first of two Bassia kata this version is the original.
Kanku Dai. Long and varied kata containing virtually all the techniques including jumping, turning and stretching. Fast and slow speeds along with hard and soft ( strong and weak ) versions of power are used. The kata depicts defence from attacks coming from all sides. Kanku dai, ' To Look At The Sky ' gives the feeling of heaven, earth and oneself all coming together as one. This kata served as the basis for many of the movements used in the Heian katas which can be clearly seen when performed.
Jion. Buddist origins of the ' Jion Temple ' in China, hence the salutation ( Yoi ) at the beginning. This kata cleverly masks the powerful attacking movements along with it's harmonious, peaceful techniques. This kata is ideal in the training and mastering of both turning and foot movements.
Empi. ' The Flight Of The Swallow ', named due to the sharp darting movements of a swallow on the wing. Empi shows a variety of karate techniques using both speed and lightness, combined with both high and low attacks and defence. An ancient kata formerly known as ' Wanshu'.
Hangetsu. Control of both breath and muscles along with stamina are great benefits obtained from training with Hangetsu. This kata's name ' Crescent Moon ' is taken from it's distinct foot movements. Originally known as ' Seisan ',This Shotokan kata is the equivalent of ' Sanchin ' from other karate systems.
To gain the full benefit from this series of kata each should be practiced daily.
